Cooking at Camp Natoma
I interned at Camp Natoma in 2012 and advanced to head cook for the 2014 summer session. Two of my interns were Cal Poly Nutrition majors and one was a freshman Environmental Science major at UC Santa Cruz. Many people admired our excellent teamwork and raved about the food.
Located in the hills of Paso Robles, Camp Natoma is a place where kids get a break from city-life and can enjoy the wonders of the outdoors. Classes like Water Sports, Archery, Nature Crafts, and Swing Dancing engage kids throughout the day and they sleep on cots under the stars at night. We cooks lived the high life with our very own Kooky Nook. The four of us slept outside on a deck and stored our stuff inside the nook. We also had access to the only indoor shower in camp!
Paso Robles is known for its extreme heat. By 10:00 it's about 80º and temperatures usually range from 90º-100º during the afternoon. Week 6 was the most brutal, with average temps ranging from 100º-110º during the day. The pool was one of my favorite retreats during rest hour—swimming laps never felt so good!
