Día 9 en Valladolid: La Coliflor con Salsa Fresca

La Comida
La Coliflor con Salsa Fresca

Salsa just means "sauce" in Spanish. In the U.S. we are used to salsa being a spicy mixture of tomatoes, onions, jalapeño, etc, which is simply a Mexican style salsa.

Chón wasn´t here for lunch because she had to attend the funeral of a dear cousin who just passed away from a lengthy sickness.  She received the call yesterday at lunch and flew to Madrid this morning.  I was surprised at how quickly they were able to arrange a funeral! She got things ready for our lunch and then Felix finished preparing it.

Since it´s in the low 90s today, Felix decided to make the cauliflower into a salad by serving it cold with a salsa of his own concoction. His salsa was a combination of minced onion, red and green bell peppers, and olive oil.  Chón boiled the cauliflower, but I think when I try this salad at home, I´ll  just steam the cauliflower to retain more nutrients.

 La Ternera con Ensalada Cruda
La ternera is veal.  It had good flavor, but was pretty tough.  Felix said he doesn´t have a lot of cooking experience, but enough so that he won´t die.
La Sandía
Watermelon was a refreshing end to a tasty meal on this sweltering day.
My Cal Poly class is going as a group to get the famous Spanish treat of chocolate con churros around 7 (early evening on Spanish time).  I´ve heard that Spanish hot chocolate is more along the lines of melted chocolate rather than the cocoa flavored beverage consumed in the U.S.  Felix laughed when we told him because Spaniards usually just have this in the winter (invierno) when it is cold outside and not 90 degrees! He said he´d much prefer helado de chocolate (chocolate ice cream).

    1. Not at all. Croissants are baked and are very pillowy, whereas churros consist of dough that has been pressed through a churro mold (similar to what you use for spritzer cookies)and then is deep fried. These churros were quite crunchy. They are also supposed to be dusted in sugar. If there´s time, I´m hoping to try La Castilla which is supposed to be the best place in Valladolid for chocolate y churros. The chocolate was more like chocolate pudding that was hot. I was expecting something more chocolatey and a bit thinner. It was fun dipping the churros in it, though.
