Noche 4 en Valladolid: La Tortilla!!

La Cena
Tortilla de Patata
We had tortilla tonight!  This is a very popular Spanish dish that I´ve been hearing a lot about.  My UVa Culture of Spain teacher, Iván, said tortilla is very easy to make, but there are good tortillas and then there are the bad ones.  The one Chón made tonight was perfect.

In the back of the picture you can see that the bottle of oil is not olive oil (GASP), but sunflower oil (aceite de girasol)!  Chón said olive oil tastes too strong, so she prefers to use an oil with a more neutral flavor.

Recipe
Cut 4 medium potatoes (2 lbs) into small pieces, and cook on high in oil for about 5 minutes.  Continue cooking them on low for about 25 more minutes, or until cooked through. Whisk 6-8 eggs in a bowl and pour them into the potatoes, stirring everything.  Let sit for about 5 minutes in the pan and then test it to see if it jiggles freely, the sign for flipping time.  You can flip it more if you want it more stiff.  Chón said she´s been making it for so many years that she just knows when it´s ready.

 Una Ensalada Verde y Tortilla
White wine vinegar (el vinagre de vino blanco) and olive oil (el aceite de olive) flavor the lettuce (la lechuga).  There was some spreadable camembert for our bread. For dessert, Chón brought out some new flavored yogurts and I had pineapple.  I´ve only tasted pineapple flavored Yoplait, but liked the size and taste of this brand better.
What a cute spatula (espátula cuchilla)! Gateau is French for cake, while the Spanish word for cake is la torta. Chón said she bought it at a kitchen supply store here in Valladolid.
