Noche 15: La Popular

La Popular, a new gourmet restaurant in Oaxaca, is owned by the host brother of two of my Nutrition classmates! We stopped by in the evening to relax after a day of touring a local hospital and speaking to the nutriólogo (Mexican equiv. of an RD).

 with Hector, the owner

Mezcal is the Oaxacen version of tequila and is used in many cocktails.  I liked how this margarita was heavy on the lime, downplaying the very strong, smoky flavor of mezcal.  The glasses at La Popular are made from wine bottles.

This Mango Mezcal cocktail was a winner. It had mango purée, mezcal, granadine, and cointreau with a chili-salt rim.  Refreshing and beautiful to look at.

It started to pour around 7, but we were dry inside!

We all shared 2 bowls of this delicious seafood soup with a tomato broth, lots of finely diced onions, chilies, shrimp, & octopus.

    1. No. The salsa verde has been very traditional so far (cilantro, tomatillos, serranos, lime, garlic).
