Tarde 26: El Tule en Mitla

Our program calendar changed, allowing us to be home for lunch, but Aurea had no time to shop or cook anything in time.  There was a brief moment of panic in the house, but she had a great idea that we could take an excursion to Mitla for la comida.  Mitla is a town about 20 minutes from Oaxaca with the famous Tule tree.

Empanadas de Mole Verde y Amarillo

Leighza and I each split a different empanada. In the end, I preferred the mole verde because of its refreshing herbal flavor, while Leighza preferred the mole amarillo.

roommate, Leighza

The empanadas were kind of messy because of the liquidy mole filling, so I was eating mine with a fork and knife.  Aurea, a true traditionalist, was quick to reprimand: "No, hands only—look, Leighza is eating it the right way!"

It was cool getting to see the tortillas being made right by our table.

Our empanandas can be seen (above) heating on the comal.

Consomé de Verduras

I also ordered veggie soup, which was brimming with carrots, green beans, corn, chayote, some rice, and a delicious chicken broth.
