Mañana 12: Tamal de Pollo y Jalapeño

La fruta de temporada (seasonal fruit) has been delicious.  Melon is so often a hit or miss item, but the cantaloupe is consistently juicy and sweet.  Aurea made more of her homemade mango yogurt (plain yogurt blended with mangos), which is as a fun dip for fruit.

We had tamales the night before for dinner because it was the 1 year anniversary of Aurea's husband's death.  It's traditional for family and friends to gather for a service of singing and bible passage reading.  Afterwards, everyone comes back to the house of the widow for a cena de tamales.

Aurea's husband's family made about 200 tamales, half of which were filled with chicken and jalapeños and the other half with mole negro.  Mole negro tamales are traditionally wrapped in banana leaves, which are more expensive and therefore less common.  The tamales de pollo were muy picante!

Spelling Note: un tamal o los tamales

I was glad Aurea had the support of so many family members and friends because this was a very difficult time for her.
